Gaiven Clairmont's Saints and Sinners

Last week, I had the pleasure of reading an author who came to my attention through a Facebook group. Usually I don't read while I'm in the middle of my own manuscript, but this time, I made an exception, and I was glad that I did. Mr. Gaiven Clairmont is the author of Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners, a two-volume work of poetry (Volume I) and Erotic Tales (Volume II). He stopped by to introduce himself and to speak about his work.

Imani: Welcome to Truerotica, Gaiven. Tell us about yourself.

Gaiven: Hmm where do I start? I love to read and love to write. Been reading since I was 2 or 3, my first books I read were Illustrated Classics like Robin Hood and A Journey to The Centre Of The Earth. Those were books I read before I was 5. From since then you couldn’t get me out of a book. I grew up on general knowledge and Science books and was a certified nerd by the time I was a teenager. I outgrew it and now I’m a Law student trying to finish off my degree as I do what I’m truly passionate about, writing.

I try to work out often but it’s a challenge, the sports I like to play are Football (Soccer) I’m from the Caribbean so we play Cricket here not Baseball and when I have the chance Golf and Tennis.

As for sports I watch I love soccer, tennis, golf, gymnastics, swimming and cricket.

I generally spend my spare time writing or watching one or two tv shows that interest me, my favourite shows on tv right now are Desperate Housewives, Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries was a fan of V till it got cancelled. Other than that I play some FIFA on my PC and once I have a good book I’m dead to the world as I live in the imagination of the author of my choosing.

Imani: How did you conceive the idea of writing your volumes of poetry?

Gaiven: Well I wanted and want for the future all my writings to make a statement of sorts. My poetry beginnings were humble in terms of what I wanted my first few poetry books to be about. Then when I got into erotic poetry writing like late in 2009, I decided I’d have my erotic poetry separated from my other work which ranged from romance, to inspirational to spiritual.

Then when I decided to do a book just about erotic poetry I thought about some titles but I was watching a Gossip Girl episode and heard something about Saints and Sinners and it just clicked. Why not segment my erotic writing into poetry for those who are saints and those who are sinners and then with the help of some of my facebook friends I chose the title Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners and put my poems in the appropriate categories.

As for my collection of short stories it was a similar process in that I wanted the stories to go together. But when it came to combining the stories I wanted to give the reader an erotic experience like no other, so you’ll see sub-headings like The adventures of Vyn Guy Clemz III, and others. Like certain stories described cheaters, some erotic stories had a twist to it in the end, one was romance based and a few had a character by the name of Vyn Guy Clemz III for example.

In a way I tried to also separate the stories into those who I felt the main characters adequately fit the role of Seductive Saints and those who fell into the category of Sensual Sinners.

Imani: When did you start writing?

Gaiven: I started writing when I was about 15, it was a chance encounter of sorts I had a crush on this girl growing up and we took some after school lessons together (we went to different schools) and then I had to stop the classes just when I was starting to make a connection with her. I didn’t see her for like about 3 months and then out of the blue I saw her and she inspired my first poem the title is a bit corny Why Am I So Lonely. From there I built on my writing though most of my poetry tended to be romance-based, I also wrote a few romantic (non-erotic stories). This continued till I was about 17 when by a tragic twist of fate I lost all my work which I’d saved on my floppy diskette and my PC.

I took it as a sign from God and focused my talents elsewhere and then after about a 6 year hiatus I resumed my writing, over the next 3 years, I started off with poetry then stories and now books (ebooks).

Imani: Your poetry is very erotic, very visual. Many of us have not read contemporary works like that by men. How did you accomplish bringing that vibe to life on the page?

Well I think my first intention was always to be a romance author not necessarily an erotic one. I started writing erotic poetry as a way to improve my own writing in terms of developing romantic scenes in my short stories I was writing at the time. Then when I got the feedback from people who read my work I continued writing eventually building a collection of my works.

For me erotic poetry or the way I make it visual for my readers is that I think about a raw act of sex for example I’ll think about a guy having sex with a woman, then I’ll think about another way to represent it so I’d probably say “their bodies swam over each other in the pool of their passions.”

I love to play with words and to me the art of poetry is using one thing to represent the next, so I’ll think of petals as a woman’s vagina and talk about a young man in a garden of pleasure, stroking a petal so as to awaken her inner desires. I also tend to use strong religious terms in my writing like “being baptised in a sea of orgasms”, “His rod resurrected my sensual soul from my solitude tomb”. I think when I write like that I get the senses in play plus when I contrast it to imagery like that, I get my readers to make an even stronger connection with what I’m saying.

Of course sometimes I do use the words “dick” and “pussy” in my poetry in an attempt to bring out a degree of raw nature to my work.

With my erotic stories I started writing them as an experiment to be honest, I just thought to myself a night I’m writing all these erotic poetry let’s a try a story, up to that moment though I’d never even read erotica, I heard about Zane and Eric Jerome Dickey but I’d never gotten around to getting any of their books. I never even intended to write erotica, it was just an experiment to see what people thought of my ability to do an extremely heavy romantic scene.

When I placed my erotic short story on facebook the feedback was so encouraging that month I wrote 3 more erotic stories. By the way that story is in my ebook it’s entitled “The Best Sex I Ever Had (The Tale Of The Lonely Housewife)” and I also shared it with some of my co-workers as I worked in an environment where about 95% of the staff were female. Again the feedback was very positive and I decided to continue writing erotica. I did buy some erotic books just to see how my writing measured up to those who were experienced in the field and what tips I could get from reading their work so as to improve my own writing.
With how I write from a woman’s point of view, I think I’m just a bit fascinated by the female’s psyche, how they think and how they respond in situations as oppose to men, I enjoy the writing in detail the emotional rollercoaster women tend to go through in making a decision and it allows someone like me who loves to write to bring these different aspects into my writing.

Imani: How have readers responded to your work?

Gaiven: That’s a great question because I think it was the encouragement of my readers which continued to fan the flame for my writing ever since I got the spark to write. Way before I began erotic writing, my poems tended to always involve females and I tended to empathise a lot with their situations like being cheated on, being the victims of domestic violence etc. As such I steadily built up a female base for my work. I remember a friend of mine who read one of my poems on facebook left a comment under it saying “Gaiven I think you have a woman’s soul”. That comment has always stayed with me and is always a sense of inspiration in terms of how I write and I never feel weird so to speak being a straight man who writes a lot from a woman’s point of view.

But it was comments like that which encouraged me to continue writing and really take this hobby and make it something more, and make it a more permanent fixture in my life. I always encourage new persons in my life to read my work, because I always believe they’ll enjoy it, it’s not about being cocky per say but it’s because I know when a friend says something nice about your writing, you as a writer always feel it may not be genuine because after all they’re your friend but when your writing resonates with the soul of a complete stranger you feel a sense of euphoria because you know your work is being enjoyed with any degree of biasness. When it happens a lot of times you start to feel like if you truly were meant to do this.

Of course when I made the transition to erotica, a lot of persons including most of my own family (aunts, cousins, etc) weren’t pleased. But I know you can’t please everyone so I don’t try, I still write romance devoid of erotica and inspirational poetry because I know my readers enjoy those as well. I could honestly say though that most of my readers who enjoyed my non-erotica work has enjoyed my erotica work as well. In all the feedback was positive enough like I said to turn what I thought may be destined to be a hobby into something much much more.

Imani: What are your favorite poems in the book? Why?

Gaiven: My favourite poems in Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners Vol I (Erotic Poetry) would be E.T Futuristic Lover, I loved the poem because it’s basically romance with a touch or eroticism in it. It speaks about someone who meets a person who’s a lover like no other. The person’s love is so good, so intoxicating it makes the writer forget about the hurt love has caused him in the past. The opening stanza:
“When I opened the windows to my soul
A heavenly glow illuminated it
My heart raced
My pulsed paced
I knew at that moment
You were the chosen one
Who would brand me a new face?”

I think it’s powerful because it talks and shows the power of love, a power a lot of people underestimate, it shows how love can light a path in front of us, a path we may never have considered if it wasn’t for love.

The poem also talks about some of confusing parts of loving someone so awe-inspiring, the person is beautiful beyond compare but her attitude is not like that of a snob, her beauty is not just limited to her appearance but it captures her soul as well. And I loved the ending of the poem:

“Do with me as you wish
For I’ve seen
With sight beyond sight
That you can do me no wrong
So bless me with your breath against my lips
Forbid not my hands to caress your waist
Allow my tongue to be baptized in your alluring taste
And let my heart be laced with yours
Interlocked
Intercepting the curse that comes with this life
For you are my gift from the afterlife.”

In terms of favourite stories from my ebook Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners Vol II (The Erotic Tales). I enjoyed writing the Confession, because I felt I was able to do a lot of character development with it and also because it explored on a very deep basis how an affair begins, and why despite some people saying the guilty party should be thrown in a den with lions, you get to see and feel for the character who messes up her relationship with her boyfriend and you feel sorry for her even though she was the guilty party.

Another one I enjoyed writing was Room 669, which is a sensual thriller with a twist at the end of it. I wouldn’t say much about it to spoil the story but it’s short, sweet and seductive. I also loved The Revenge of Vyn Guy Clemz III, which is similar to room 669 because of it’s twist in the end. Both of the stories start off with or in the heat of the action but as clothes are taken off so is the tale and you as the reader piece together the promiscuous puzzle as to why those persons are there and what is their intentions besides erotic euphoria.

Imani: How has your poetry changed over the years? Do you write other genres as well?

Gaiven: I’ve been writing erotica for about 15 months now, like I stated before my poetry progressed from romance, social issues and inspirational works to sensual poems because I wanted to improve my romance writing abilities in terms of writing sensual scenes for some stories I was working on.

I never intended to be an erotic writer it just happened because of an experiment in terms of putting up my first erotic story. Because of the great feedback I felt I’d try my hand at it and see where it goes. When I collected most of my erotic stories I placed them in a book and the rest as they say is history.

But despite my concentration on erotic writing at the moment I do write other genres as well, I have stories I’m currently moulding into romance novels, romance and inspirational anthologies, thriller and suspense-filled novels as well. I love and respect all genres might even try my hand at a horror novel and a fantasy based novel in the near future.

Imani: Who are your favorite poets and authors?

Gaiven: My favourite poets would probably be William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe and Maya Angelou, I also have some very talented friend who are poets who I interact with on facebook and whose work I enjoy reading tremendously Kristal Blu, Michael Jones, Aline Natasya, Shantay Morisette, China L’ Amour, Pharaoh Robinson, to name a few.

As far favourite authors, I love the works of J.K Rowling, John Grisham, John Wyndam, Dan Brown and Masie Moscoe and Eric Jerome Dickey.

Imani: What's next for Gaiven Clairmont?

Gaiven: Well I’m currently finishing up my first novel, it is an erotic thriller of sorts entitled Reality, Dreams and Nightmares, I’m hoping to be able to edit it and have it available as an ebook later this year. I’m also working on trying to get printed copies of my first 3 ebooks available to local bookstores where I live in Trinidad and Tobago. Then I have two other books I’m hoping to finish early next year, one is a romance novel geared towards teenagers it’s non erotic and another is a novel about personal journey and self-growth. Both novels will be written as a first person narrative and will feature women as the central characters.

Imani: Any words for aspiring writers? Other things you want to say.

Gaiven: Keep writing, and always try to improve. When I look back at my writing 3, 4 years ago and I look at it now I see definitive improvement. Also take criticism in stride and be honest with yourself in terms of your writing. Read that essential you learn a great deal from reading, also read writer’s tips on how to develop characters and make your story interesting. Also too when reading your favourite books, think about what made you love it and enjoy it and try to incorporate those things into your writing.

But don’t stop, even if you’re getting writer’s block, change up your writing times or your scenery, go to cafes and write, but don’t stop writing and keep believing in yourself and your work and of course prayer is very important, and great not good luck to all aspiring writers out there.

My review of Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners:

I just finished reading Gaiven Clairmont's Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners: The Erotic Tales.

Oh my goodness, this book was an amazing collection of Erotica!

From cover to cover, Gaiven took me and my senses on the erotic ride of a lifetime.

My favorite was "The G-Spot Experiments, Parts I and II."

With this work, Gaiven's brilliant wordplay teased me, and showed his excellent command of the English language. His writing style is poetic, sensual, and sexy. I was in awe as his tales of "intimate intrusions" and "erotic enlightenments" took me to places I've been, and places I've merely fantasized about.

Gaiven wrote with such "slow, sensual precision," that he kept me wishing my lover was nearby. His description of things familiar made me feel like I knew nothing at all. I wanted to know more, feel more, experience things through his eyes.

And the heat in Seductive Saints and Sensual Sinners definitely took me there.

This book is a great collection that should be read by anyone who enjoys Erotica. And even if you've never read this genre, Mr. Clairmont's book is the perfect introduction into a world of satisfied senses, fulfilled fantasies, and unforgettable encounters.

A New Review and Two Wins at the African American Literary Awards!

The past week was very exciting for us: we received more 5-star reviews AND we picked up awards for "Strawberries" as well as "Between the Sheets."

"Wow I must say this book was worth it's weight in gold. Enjoyed every story and loved the subtle blend of poetic sentences with seductive and raw erotica.

The stories held my imagination and allowed my mind to be fully engulfed with the erotic scenarios that were tossed up. Loved the intro, which gave but a peak of what was to come.

Now, about those amazing awards we received in New York City this past Thursday night:

We were so honored that our book "Strawberries, Stilettos, and Steam," was voted Erotica of the Year, an award that was announced at this year's event held at Melba's Restaurant in Harlem. Heavy hitters like Treasure Blue, K'wan, J.M. Benjamin, Ni'cola Mitchell, Tamika Newhouse, Q.B. Wells, and so many others graced the spot at a ceremony that recognizes members of the African American literary community. K'wan even announced his recent signing with Cash Money Content, the new publishing arm of Cash Money.

It felt great to have our names and our book titles mentioned in such esteemed company. We feel like we're on the map now, and we have to thank our publisher Ms. Ni'cola Mitchell, CEO of NCM Publishing. This time last year, we were just getting our feet wet in the game, and now we've been honored with this award. Very cool, to say the least!

Another work that received accolades is "Between the Sheets," an erotic anthology published by Delphine Publications, the baby of Tamika Newhouse, who was also voted Self-Published Author of the Year. "Between the Sheets" boasts sexy stories from some of the hottest authors out there right now: Tamika, Ni'cola, Michael Mcgrew, Dreama, Jhamika, JusMe, Anna Black, myself, and more. Again, we were honored to be a part of this project and the recognition it received.

So here it is....African American literature was recognized in a big way this past week, and we were part of it all.

Introducing "The Queen!"

It's my pleasure to introduce to you a friend and fellow writer who's making her mark on the West Coast with her books, and her support for other authors-new and already known. Meet "Queen B.G." who is the author of Dealt the Wrong Hand. She's about to hit the Harlem Book Fair next week, and took a little time to speak with me while packing her bags for this major book event. Thanks, Queen for stopping by "True's World." Tell us a little about yourself.

Queen: I am a single mother of four, a Los Angeles native, and a very loving person. I am currently the author of Dealt the Wrong Hand, featured author in an anthology titled Murder She Wrote, the President of Cali Connect; an authors conglomerate promoting urban literature on the West Coast, and finally the Founder of Queens Club Corporation; a non-profit organization geared towards assisting underprivileged and at risk youth in Los Angeles County.

True: Tell us about your book

Queen: Dealt the Wrong Hand is a story of a young girl forced into adulthood and the streetlife way too early. With no stability and no one to offer her any guidance, she loses her way and loses control of herself. Her choices aren't always good, but KeKe, the main character in my book, will do any and everything she can to take care of her siblings.

True: When did you start writing?

Queen: I started writing as a young girl as a way of venting. But I started writing seriously about 8 years ago.

True: How do you get the ideas for your characters and stories?

Queen: My ideas come from everyday life. Life itself is full of stories and I felt as though I needed to tell them. The struggles, the triumph, the obstacles, etc that people face everyday inspires me to write and be a voice for them who can't tell their story themselves.

True: Who are your idols as far as writers?

Queen: OMG There are so many! Wahida Clark, Nikki Turner, Omar Tyree, K'wan, Sista Souljah. I can go on and on because there are so many talented authors out there.

True: : You can tell so much about a person by the music they listen to. So what's on your music playlist right now?

Queen: I love love love listening to neo-soul music. So my list includes artists like Ledisi, Kem, Raheem DaVaughn, Eryka Badu, and Jill Scott.

True: What do you see as the biggest challenge faced by today's authors?

Queen: The African American market. There are just not enough bookstores or supporters of urban literature. Especially, not on the West Coast. I do believe that things are about to change, though. We as authors are coming out swinging, and have no plans on going anywhere, leaving no other option but to embrace and respect us.

True: Where can readers find you and your book?

True: What's next for Queen?

Queen: I'm featured in an anthology along with TR Nairn and EricaKimberly. Murder She Wrote was released July 15th. The sequel to Dealt the Wrong Hand will be coming out shortly after, entitled Bridge to Destruction. And I plan on hosting some really big events this year and next, so be on the lookout for that.

True: Your Literary Picnic was an awesome event, by the way. I really enjoyed myself and met some great authors. So do you have any advice for aspiring writers and for those already out there in the middle of their grind?

Queen: My advice will be keep writing, keep grinding, don't be afraid to be yourself, and put God in front of all that you do. This is a crazy game and you MUST give it all you got and DO NOT stop. No matter what comes your way, find your way around it, over it, or through it, just keep pushing forward.

"Strawberries" debuts at Barnes and Noble in Las Vegas!

It was well past my bedtime when my publisher, Ni'cola Mitchell of NCM Publishing, uploaded the photo. It was a picture of "Strawberries, Stilettos, and Steam" on the top shelf of a display at a local bookstore. The book was face-front, it's brilliant cover daring the world to peek between its delectable pages.

"What store is it? Where is it?" I responded to the Facebook post. I was hardly able to contain my excitement.

Ni'cola typed back, "Barnes and Noble on Rainbow."

OUR BOOK! Nestled between Gary Shteyngart and Scott Sigler in the Alphabetical Order by Author part of the store! That's us; the red-bottom stilettos, red wine spilling out to spell words, and tempting strawberries ripe for the sampling.

I immediately called my co-author, Ms. Dreama Skye, to share the moment with her. She's my "Partner-in-Crime," and someone who could understand what that picture truly meant to me. It was like holding my newborn in my arms for the very first time-after dealing with the pregnancy, labor pains, and finally, the delivery. As a published author, there was only one other moment in time that surpassed seeing that image: it was the first time I opened a shipment of our books from the printer.

Twenty-four hours after laying eyes on that picture, I'm still on cloud nine thinking of how I've been writing for over 40 years to get to this moment, feel this feeling; how I was the loner most of my life, pen in hand-hoping, praying, knowing, that I would one day see something I wrote, on the shelves of a major bookstore chain.

I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve.

So tonight, pardon me if I sleep with visions of our book, "Strawberries, Stilettos, and Steam," a collection of Erotica, on the top shelf of the New Fiction section at MY local B&N store.

Back from Memphis and it was HOTTT!!

This past weekend, my co-author and I hit Memphis for the Sisterhood Convention, an annual event dedicated to various issues that concern women of color. And the 95 degree temperature wasn't the ONLY heat in the building! Sexy male models, Johnny Gill, Glenn Jones, Tocarra, Calvin Richardson and Cupid showed up and showed out for the ladies! There were exhibits about hair and skin care, vendors of all kinds, and down home cooking, which I miss since moving to the west coast. We even had some exotic dancers in the spot!

Dreama and I attended the event to promote "Strawberries, Stilettos, and Steam" in the Midwest and South. We had the honor of meeting some authors we knew, but had never met, and were able to interact with readers! It was a great experience, and we're looking forward to next year when Dreama and I will have at least 4 titles between us. Thank you, Memphis, for the southern hospitality. See you in 2012!

Since my last blog post, alot has happened with our books. For starters, "SSS" is now available in the following locations: Charis Books and More, 1189 Euclid Ave NE, Atlanta GA; The Dock Bookshop, 6637 Meadowbrook Drive, Fort Worth, TX; Tamika's Bookstand on base at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Working daily to get it in more stores.

Okay, so we went to ATL last weekend, and were received very well. Angela at Charis hosted a Friday night event set up by Elizabeth(Thank you both). Lots of our friends came out: Ms. Claudia Moss, Ki, The Writer Thicke, and so many others. This is after meeting some amazing folks in Dallas back in January (Hey Deborah and Quyesha)!

Anyway, it turns out that Atlanta was the place to be on Valentine's weekend. DJ Warlock of Strong Arm Entertainment hooked us up with some awesome venues, great music, and we shut the VIP down(Thanks, Troy and Ann Marie)! Special thanks to the folks at Phoenix Soul, 2617 Panola Rd., in Lithonia, and the ownership of Luella's in McDonough for also hosting us. Thanks to Cinque Tate and Ms. Kenya Adams for supporting us the whole weekend. And thanks to Ox Mendez for the support as well. We celebrated with Apple Martinis, Bob Marleys, and my new favorite, Moscato! Needless to say, I'm going back there first chance I get!

In True's World would like to introduce you to Ms. Claudia Moss, Author of the upcoming novel entitled, "If You Love Me, Come." Her book will be released later this week, but Claudia dropped by for a quick interview before she hits the book promo trail.

Imani: Thank you, Claudia, for allowing me to interview you. It's an honor. Tell us about your latest book.

Claudia: Delighted! But first, let me say THANK YOU for having me as a Guest Author on your blog, Imani True! I appreciate you wholeheartedly!

My novel is the story of what happens when the unexpected becomes reality in Frenonia Roberts’ dream-girl life, and how she and others lose themselves, plunged as they are into pain, hurt and longing, for different reasons…until they find the way back to love and inner peace. At heart, I believe every story is a love story, and mine is no different.

Imani: When did you start writing? And what's kept you motivated to continue?

Claudia: I started writing stories when I realized words could come together to form stories that engaged my attention and that of my readers. Thus, I have always been a storyteller, a charming liar, a weaver of words (soft laughter). Sometimes, when I wasn’t writing, as a child, I’d create stories spontaneously, sitting before my siblings and cousins, leaving them spellbound and requesting more.

Passion keeps my inner flame aglow. It drives me, guides me, and that energy has a sweet knack of placing me and books together, merging me and a keyboard, lovers unable to walk away from one another.

Imani: How do you come up with the ideas for your story lines and characters?

Claudia: Writing ideas drift to me from every aspect and stage of my life. I once wrote for Sterling McFadden magazines, the Black Romance, Jive and Black Secrets lines. They have since become less visible on supermarket racks, but years ago, one could find them everywhere, even in the hands of some of my students, when I was in the classroom.

I’d have enjoyed a conversation with my good girlfriends or watched a show or movie and just like that an idea would germinate in my imagination and there would be a story, in living color! I love to write in my journal and jot down “What if” scenarios. This frequently serves me well. Some of the story lines come out of my dreams, in which I am the star, doing something I have not yet done in my everyday existence.

Imani: Who are your idols as far as writers?

Claudia: I adore so many writers, of which you are one! Idols? Hmmm. There has never been a time when I was not in love with the works of Toni Morrison, Fiona Zedde, and Alice Walker. I admire Terry McMillan, Edwidge Danticat, Pearl Cleage, August Wilson, Trisha R. Thomas and Helen Elaine Lee. I have yet to read Odessa Rose’s “Water in A Broken Glass,” but I have heard she is a wonderful stylist.

Imani: What inspires you: to live, to write, to express yourself?

Claudia: I am captivated with the notion that we were made in the Creator’s image, that we are creators and that we have the power to attract the life that we want to live. I am drunk on the thought that we can speak the colors, the brilliant and vibrant colors, like artfully splashed paint, onto the canvas of our lives, and be who we want to be!

Imani: What music is on your playlist right now?

Claudia: This morning I was listening to STRIP TEASE CLASSICS and THE DRIFTERS and LUTHER VANDROSS. I love music. Beside me, here at my desk, are stacks of music: Melissa Etheridge, Iyanla Vanzant’s inspirational CD’s, Doria Roberts, John Legend, Diana Krall, Lyfe Jennings, and Nefertiti and the nefTUNES to share a few.

Imani: If you weren't a writer, a creative person, what job would you be doing?

Claudia: If I weren’t a writer, I’d be a singer. (laughter) I’d hit the stage like Patti and Tina, shakin’ it up and puttin’ it down, Baby! I’d caress the mic like Alicia, make it purr in Nina style, or draw you up straight and hold you tight like Aretha. I’d be draped in sass like Madonna and Beyonce, shocking and regaling.

Imani: Any advice for writers who are just starting out?

Claudia: Know who you are. Don’t write to emulate someone you admire who writes. Never bother to write to chase a dollar; it will only lead you to a job. Go within, meet your talents and passion, and if you are a writer, you will do what you cannot help but do: you will write. No matter what. That kind of passion will save you, baptize you, caress you when the rejections come and see you through when the work is done and you, holding it, realize all over again how very much you love the art.

Imani: Where can we find you?

Imani: What can we expect from you, Ms. Moss, in the next few years?

Claudia: Creation! This year, I will introduce a new character, unique and outspoken, in a collection that I am editing now. A poetry collection whispers to me to cull time out to see it to publication. I will delve into the precious realms of children and adolescent literature. My first novel, DOLLY: THE MEMOIRS OF A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE is an adolescent novel.

I have plans for a calendar and a card line. I will further explore being on both sides of the camera. I will perform burlesque and other manifestations of dance. I will travel and pen a travel log. I will write a screenplay. I will work in film and television. And of course, there will be other novels, anthologies, erotic fiction collections, and new stage productions. In short, I will be somewhere doing Claudia Moss as only I can! Quite frankly, I am an ambitious soul! You can expect me to shatter barriers, and tap dance on whom I shouldn’t be!

Book and Pajama Drive for Homeless Children in Los Angeles-December 18, 2010

Authors Patricia Bridewell, Cherie Johnson, Michael McGrew, Ni'cola Mitchell, and Imani True will be collecting used books and distributing pajamas, along with signing copies of their novels at the Downtown Los Angeles Community of Skid-Row located 752 S. Main Street at the Historic Huntington Hotel from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010 to benefit the Fun Zone Reading Club a Merit Reading Club for the homeless children that reside in that community. The focus of the reading club is to gain involvement from the community to grow to the Housing Projects of Watts. This Reading Club is striving to promote stability, dignity, and self-reliance for these disadvantaged children.Collection of books has begun and will last until the duration of the drive.

Who: Patricia Bridewell, Author of Reflections of a Quiet Storm, is a best selling author for Xpress Yourself Publishing Company. She is a contributing writer to the anthology, Gumbo for the Soul - Women of Honor: Pink Edition, and another short story will appear in author Vanessa Miller's Keeping the Faith anthology. Her articles has been published in the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, Advance for Nurses Magazine, and in several online magazines. She is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, Zora Neale/Richard Wright foundation, and International Black Writers and Artists - Los Angeles. Cherie Johnson,is an actress/writer/producer. After her role in the television, 80's sitcom "Punky Brewster" Cherie co-starred in another popular 90's sitcom 'Family Matters' as the best friend of Laura Winslow. She also had recurring roles in "The Parkers" and 'Days of Our Lives.' In addition, she started an after school recreation program --Off the Streets -- for kids whose parents worked late night. More recently, Cherie wrote, produced and starred i n the movie ' I Do ... I Did' on DVD & BET, along with a long list of other available and upcoming DVD's. My book was waiting for me when I got home last night. I was up until 2 a.m. reading. The book was what I expected it to be: really hot and awesome- I was saddened when I was almost done!
